Home Inspection
Genesee Fire Rescue Home Inspection Program
The primary purpose of a Genesee Fire Rescue (GFR) Home Inspection is to share information with homeowners in the community about wildfire risk reduction. These inspections are voluntary and free for property owners. By assessing homes and properties, the goal is to prioritize mitigation actions that can reduce the risk of wildfire damage.
A GFR Mitigation Specialist conducts the home inspection. They evaluate both the vegetation around the home (known as defensible space) and the vulnerabilities of the home (referred to as home hardening).
After the inspection, homeowners will receive a detailed report with recommendations. These recommendations focus on practical steps homeowners can take to minimize wildfire risk. The goal is to empower homeowners with knowledge about how they can protect their homes and property.
Living in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) means inherent exposure to a higher risk of wildfires. Historically, fire played a natural role in ecosystems, but decades of fire suppression have led to increased fuel loading and more intense wildfires. Home inspections aim to bridge this gap by promoting informed actions for fire resilient homes.
Remember, these inspections are an opportunity for homeowners to proactively safeguard their properties and contribute to community-wide wildfire resilience.

DISCLAIMER: Wildfire mitigation work can reduce the risk to life and property from wildfire and can help fire personnel protect your home. However, the risk cannot be completely eliminated. Wildfire can be unpredictable and uncontrollable, and despite following all steps recommended, there is no guarantee of personal safety or protection from damage. The Defensible Space Inspection (DSI) is intended to educate and support participants in taking responsibility for reducing their risk from wildfire but makes no claim as to the ultimate effectiveness of the program or mitigation actions.
